Gerard Fergerson Memories Memories of Gerard Fergerson

I am not an alum of AJHS, but my 1st cousin, Dr. Gerard Fergerson, Ph.D., was an esteemed member among this group of former students and graduates of Andrew Jackson High School. \r\nGerard passed on from this world on December 17, 2013, in Washington, D.C. shortly after his 49TH birthday - December 2, 1964.\r\nGerard graduated from AJHS as class Salutatorian in 1981, and recipient of numerous scholarly honors and awards. From high school, he earned a Bachelor\'s degree with honors from Wesleyan University. He then went on to earn a Master\'s degree in African-American Studies from Yale University, and finally a Ph.D. in the History of Science and Medicine from Harvard University.\r\nGerard, Dr. Fergerson taught History and Public Policy at the Robert F Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at NYU, also the 1st African-American in a tenure track appointment in this program since the school\'s founding in 1938. Many of his works were published in professional journals, which includes the Journal of Adolescent Health, Medical Anthropology Quarterly, and others.\r\nGerard, a recipient of countless awards, fellowships and scholarships, was a three time recipient of the Award for Teaching and Outstanding Service To Students during his Professorship at NYU. While at Harvard, he was President of the W.E.B. Dubois Graduate Society. In Washington, D.C., he worked in the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Children, Youth, and Elders. In Minneapolis, he was Director of the Race Disparity Initiative at the Council on Crime and Justice.\r\nExtremely well-loved, and fondly remembered by those who knew him, my cousin and your classmate, touched the lives of so many of us, and left an ever-present feeling of warmth within our hearts and minds.\r\nMay he remain in memory and celebrated as a 16 year old graduate of Andrew Jackson High School who \'made a difference\' and defied the odds as an African American male. His accomplishments during his life, though ended too soon, should also serve as an inspiration to all high school students who dream to make a POSITIVE difference in the lives of others.
